Tennessee American Water Company (TAWC) is a public utility serving the water needs of 74,535 customers in Chattanooga and North Georgia and is regulated by the Tennessee Regulatory Authority (TRA). TAWC is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Water Works (AWWC). AWWC has 15.6 million customers in 32 states.
On March 14, 2008, TAWC filed a petition requesting an increase of $7.6 million in revenues, which would result in a 21% rate increase for residential, commercial and industrial customers. The request by TAWC included an 11.75% return on its equity investment. The Consumer Advocate, City of Chattanooga and the Atmos Intervention Group intervened and opposed the rate hike. After hearing on the merits of the matter, the TRA granted only 4.3% of the rate increase sought by TAWC resulting in a $1.6 million rate hike. As a result of the interventions, TAWC customers will save $6 million annually.
