Tennessee American Water Company (TAWC) is a public utility serving the water needs of 73,900 customers in the Chattanooga area and is regulated by the Tennessee Regulatory Authority (TRA). TAWC is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Water Works.
In November, 2006, TAWC filed a petition requesting an increase of $6.4 million in revenues, which would result in a 19.67% rate increase for residential, commercial and industrial customers. The CAPD intervened opposing the rate hike. After hearing on the merits of the matter, the TRA ruled in favor of granting a 12.6% rate increase resulting in a $4.1 million rate hike. While the ruling was higher than expected, as a result of the CAPD’s intervention, TAWC customers will save $2.3 million annually.
