On June 17, 2014, Tennessee, along with the Attorneys General of 48 states and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD),and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), reached a $550 million joint-state federal settlement with mortgage lender and servicer SunTrust Mortgage Inc. to address origination, servicing, and foreclosure abuse. This agreement provides servicing standards to improve homeowner communications with SunTrust, and also relief to eligible homeowners through principal reduction and cash payments to foreclosed borrowers.
It will take some time for SunTrust to implement these programs and you should be contacted directly by SunTrust or the settlement administrator later this year if you are eligible. SunTrust borrowers should contact SunTrust directly at 1-800-634-7928 or on the website at www.SunTrustMortgage.com to find out more information about principal reductions and whether they qualify under the terms of this settlement.
